SUMPU CASTLE
Sumpu Castle was built on a plain in a contoured style surrounded by three moats : an inner, central and outer moat. The castle was composed of a main enclosure (the Honmaru), surrounded by a secondary enclosure (the Ninomaru) and a tertiary enclosure (the Sannnomaru). On the northwest corner of the main enclosure (the Honmaru) there was a building called a donjon (Tenshukaku) with five external roofs and seven internal levels, but they were burnt down in 1635.
Sumpu Castle first made an appearance in 1585 when Ieyasu Tokugawa started construction. The castle of the period is assumed to have been slightly smaller than the present site, but exact details of its size are not known.
Lord Ieyasu, one of the founders of the Edo government, retired as shogun in 1607. He then startd repairing and expanding the original castle into a "Shogun's Residence" in preparation for coming to live at Sumpu. When Lord Ieyasu resided in the castle, Sumpu, along with Edo, played an important role as a principal center of the Tokugawa government."
