Takashima Castle
Takashima Castle was constructed by Takayoshi Hineno, one of Hideyoshi Toyotomi's Samurai warriors, in 1590. Construction was begun in 1592 and completed in 1598.
The castle was called "the Floating Castle of Lake Suwa" bucause it appeared as if is rose out of the water. At that time the lake waters reached as far as the castle, and it was surrounded on its other sides by several rivers which served as moats.
Yorimizu Sawa replaced Takayoshi Hineno in 1601 and for ten generations, 270 years his descendants governed the Suwa area from the castle.
The last suwa clan ruler was Tadaaya Suwa, who was removed from office with the abolition of the clan government system and the establishment of prefectures in Japan.
The caslte was torn down and the site was opened to the public in 1876 as Takashima park. Almost 100 years later in 1970. Takashima castle was reconstructed with finical contributions donated by residents of Suwa who left nostalgia for the city's old landmark.EXPLAINED BY SUWA CITY
